Improving the Kitchen: the Heart of the HomeOn December 14, 2016 by mary
In most homes, the kitchen is the most used room. If the room is big enough for a dining table, people often gather there, not only for meals, but also for somewhere to stop for a chat. Improving the kitchen will have a huge impact on the feel of the whole house.
Think home improvements and kitchens and most of us will think about new units. That is one way of making a big change in the kitchen, but smaller improvements, such as a new coat of paint or new wooden worktops, can also improve the look of the room.
If the existing kitchen units are in good condition but looking a little jaded, the doors could be painted, or have fresh stain applied. New door handles could bring a new look, while there are companies who make new doors for cupboards and drawers. New work surfaces, such as wooden worktops, will bring fresh life to a kitchen and also a touch of luxury. With a little care, they will stay looking good for years to come, their appearance improving with age.
It’s important to have sufficient storage in a kitchen and if there are lots of gadgets, bottles, tins and utensils left on wooden worktops or on open shelves, then it might be worth considering storage options. A kitchen that looks busy, with attractive jars of food or lovely crockery on display, can look good, but this is certainly not so easy to keep clean and will soon acquire a fine film of dust. Glass doors may be the ideal compromise to keep the shelves and the items on show clean but still making an attractive display.
Walls, Ceilings and Floors
Walls and floors in particular get a lot of hard ware in a kitchen. A fresh coat of paint on the walls and ceiling will make the room look fresher and cleaner. This could be the opportunity to choose a new colour and change the feel of the room. If new worktops are being added, it may be possible to keep existing wall tiles, but again, with so many lovely tiles to choose from, this could be the chance to have a makeover. Food and liquids get spilled regularly and the floor needs to be easy to clean. Ceramic tiles or laminate are two good choices for kitchen floors, with lots of designs available for both.
A lot of activity goes on in the kitchen and it may be quite a public room, with friends and neighbours calling by and children’s friends stopping by on their way home from school. The kitchen needs to be able to be kept clean and to look clean, even when a glance at the wooden worktops show there is a lot of busy food preparation going on. Every now and then it is worth taking a step back, seeing the kitchen with fresh eyes and deciding what improvements would keep it looking fresh.
